Table Tennis News for September 2001
Oldham
Chronicle Article 24th September 01.
We did not have to wait long for the first fixture between the reigning
first division champions Royton ‘A’ and the fancied Werneth ‘A’, which resulted
in a 6-4 win for Royton despite 3 wins from Werneth’s Darryl Meredith over his
ex team mates. " Carrying his new team mates won’t do Darryl’s bad back
much good." was mentioned.
Hollinwood ‘B’ had an excellent draw against Hamer ‘A’ with 2 wins each for
George Jones & Jack Christian. Phil Myers won his 3 sets, narrowly beating Jack
game 19 in the third game having been 20 - 11 up and then relying on the net
for the final point.
In Division Two, 8 of the 10 sets went to three in the drawn match between
Hamer ‘B’ and Hollinwood ‘D’, with three hard earned wins for Hamers’ Richard Hinchcliffe
.
In Division Three, Transport ‘B’ defeated Austerlands 7-3 with 3 wins from
Glenn Chadwick, ably assisted by 2 wins each from the 73 year old Vinnie
Flannagan and Dave Harris( Age unknown).
Division Four match at Unison ‘D’ saw the up and coming Schoolboys from
Failsworth ‘B’ go down 10 - 0, although they were far from disgraced. The
spirit and skill they are displaying in their first season in the league is
very encouraging for the future of Oldham Table Tennis, under the guidance of
coaches Pete Aspin and Dave Griffiths. Gareth Dalton, Adam Young, Dean Brennan,
Paul Carter and Daniel Oliver have already made their debuts, with John
Stephenson and Jonathan Hulme yet to appear.
