Following last weeks efforts Werneth A came back to earth losing 6-4 at Honeywell Lane A. Dave Hamilton was unbeaten for Honeywell backed by singles from Paul Rowbotham and Tim Baker and taking the doubles 15-13 in the fourth to give them victory over Darryl & Stuart Meredith who had two wins each.

OTTC B disposed of Werneth C 9-1 with trebles from Dave Griffith and Gary Skinner. Werneth’s only win came from Paul Wilkinson against Andy Kaye.

OTTC A have set off slowly only managing a draw against Hyde YMCA A thanks to Glenn Payne (3) and Lee Devenport (2), with Terry Taylor (2) and singles from Lionel Royle and Steve Lyons in reply.

Werneth B were involved in a close 6-4 win against Hollinwood A with doubles from Eddie Darlington and Doug Hill and a single from Phil Myers. John DePledge was unbeaten for Hollinwood.

Another close game resulted in a 6-4 win for Glodwick against Hollinwood B, with 6 of the games going the full distance. All players contributed with doubles from Siful Khan, Khamal Hussain and Colin Boardman and singles from Majid Tubasum , George Jones and Jack Christian.

 

In Division 2 Pennine’s Glen Chadwick was unbeaten in his team’s 7-3 defeat by Uppermill. Glenn Hewitt, Gary Crossley and Mark Simpson all scored doubles.

Hollinwood C overcame Grotton A 6-4 thanks to a treble from John Flowers and a double for Phil Holmes. Dave Morris replied with a double backed by singles from Steve Oliver & Tony Prescott.

The Failsworth A team of Rob Carter (3), Nathan Buckley and Derek Buckley with two each, beat Unison A 7-3. Paul Howarth replied with two wins.

Hyde YMCA B beat Honeywell C 6-4 thanks to a treble from Dennis Bradshaw and a double from Nick Bakewell.

A win in the doubles gave Failsworth B the victory against First Transport. All players contributed, with doubles from Paul Whyatt, Richard Hinchliffe and Tommy Ryan and singles from Ian Connell, Brian Hall and Dave Harris who has transferred from Pennine to cover for Kenny Hayes who is unlikely to play for a few months.

A strong Honeywell B team beat Hollinwood E team 9-1. Harry Ross was Hollinwood’s only winner, beating Howard Travis, Ken Ward and Brian Higgins being unbeaten.

 

In Division 3 Uppermill B turned out a strong team at Owls A, winning

8-2. A Peter Watson treble along with doubles from Keith Moores and Howard Meadham did the damage.

A treble from Colin Ogden was the backbone of Gilders A 7-3 win at Grotton B.

Andy Hey put in a similar performance in Unison C’s 7-3 win at Coldhurst B.

The Unison B team of John Maher, David Atkinson & Mike O’Gara all scored doubles in their 7-3 win at Gilders A for whom Fred Wood won two and Tony Robinson one.

 

In Division 4 Coldhurst E beat their F team 8-2 with maximums from Murray Corbin & Peter Altham and a single from Paul Cahill. Jeff Elliott & Dave Varney replied.

The Honeywell E team of Ronnie Holt (1) Aaron Rowbotham (3) and John Kershaw (2) beat Owls B 6-4. Dinesh Gorasia with two wins and John Tanner with a single replied for the Owls.

The Unison D team of Dennis Heyes, Martin Haigh & Roger Jagger all won two each in their 7-3 win against Failsworth E, all losing to Pete Aspin.

Lacashire County Trials.

 

The Oldham junior players who played at the county trials at

Bolton recently, finished in the following positions--

 

Rebekah Griffith finished 2nd in the junior girls and will play for

the county 1st team in December. She also finished 2nd in the Cadet Girls.

Paul Carter finished 6th and Adam Rowbotham 7th in the junior boys and will represent the county 2nd team in November.

 

 

 Nathan Buckley finished 2nd and Adam Rowbotham 3rd in the Cadet boys, and will play for the county cadet team at Halifax in November.

 

Matthew Evans (9th), Daniel Cooper (10th), and Bradley

Dawson (12th) also played well in the event, which attracted

36 under 14 year olds from all over Lancashire.

Oldham & District Table Tennis League Division 1

Last season’s champions, now playing as Oldham Table Tennis Club, came unstuck in their opening match of the season against Werneth A. Darryl Meredith starred for Werneth inflicting defeats on Mark Ramsbottom, Phil Biggs and Bill Russell. All looked lost for Darryl being six love down in the fifth, but with fearless attacking shots he went on to beat Mark game seven.  Stuart Meredith contributed two good wins with Pete Morris adding a single for the win.

 

Honeywell Lane A team beat Glodwick 6-4 thanks to a treble from Dave Hamilton and a double from Paul Rowbotham, both beating Siful Khan, the current Oldham Champion in the process.

 

Hollinwood A, with trebles from Tim Hatton and Simon Hardwick beat their weakened B team 8-2. Jack Christian winning the one singles for the ‘B’ against Adge Lowe.

 

BAe A beat their B team 7-3 with unbeaten stints from Tony Bates and Tony Smith. Kevin and Mick Hill replied with wins against Tom Lang.

 

In Division 2, Uppermill A opened with a fine 8-2 win against Honeywell B, including trebles from Glenn Hewitt & Gary Crossley.

Relegated Grotton A disposed of Unison A by the same scoreline with a treble from Tony Prescott and doubles from Steve Oliver & Dave Morris. Liaqat Ali replied with two wins on his debut for Unison.

The Honeywell C team of Ian Naylor (3), Allan Marston (2) and Barrie Royle(2), overcame Pennine 8-2.

 

In Division 3 Failsworth C beat Gilders B 6-4 with a Ray Woods treble and Vin Gaffey double.

Failsworth’s D team beat the Gilders A team by the same score with doubles from Derek Buckley & Jack Greenwood and a single from Pete Aspin. Martin Nicholls and Colin Ogden both replied with two wins each with Colin’s win over Derek being particularly noteable.

Werneth D beat Unison B 6-4 thanks to a treble from Mike Pellowe and a double from Alan Else. John Maher replied with a double, along with singles from David Atkinson and Mike O’Gara who pushed Mike Pellowe all the way.

Honeywell D won all their singles against Owls A, just losing the doubles in their

9-1 win.

Grotton B overcame Unison C 7-3 with Alf Barker being unbeaten.

The Coldhurst B team of Malcolm Wills John McLoughlin & Tom Chandler all won two games each against their C team, for whom Neil England, Neil Chapman & Adrian Waugh all replied with singles.

 

In Division 4 new team Saddleworth CC surprised the Deaf Club – by not turning up, leaving us all to wonder why they bothered joining the league.

Werneth E were involved in a closely fought draw against Unison D with every player contributing, but none unbeaten.

Werneth’s F team also drew with Coldhurst F, with Ron Tench being the only player to win three.

John Kershaw performed similarly for Honeywell E in their 7-3 win at Coldhurst E.

Coldhurst D beat OTTC C 7-3 with Terry Holland unbeaten. Rebekah Griffith replied with two wins.

The Uppermill team of Stuart Hanson (3), Gary Kershaw (2) and Mick Burke (2), beat Failsworth E 8-2.Alan Nightingale and Dave Murphy replied.

TABLE  TENNIS  PREVIEW

 

The Oldham and District Table Tennis season gets underway next week with a full complement of 56 teams competing in the four divisions.  The league is  the strongest it has been for a good few years with a  total of 244 registered players.

There have been a few ‘ interesting transfers and comebacks’ in the closed season,

 

In Division One, Siful Khan, the Oldham Champion, has moved to Glodwick.

Darryl Meredith & Ian McLean are back at Werneth after a year out.

Tim Hatton, Adge Lowe and Jon DePledge  are now at Hollinwood .

David Hamilton has joined Honeywell.

Dave Griffith has formed the new Oldham Table Tennis Club, playing out of the Oldham Sports Centre incorporating the old NCFPPP team and two teams from Failsworth.

 

In Division two Glenn Hewitt makes a welcome return at Uppermill, and Liaqat Ali has moved to Unison.

Diana Twist and Steve Buckley have registered with Hyde YMCA.

The old Hamer Delph team have moved in with Honeywell and Barrie Royle has joined them after many seasons out.

Gary Newton is back at Hollinwood after a nine year absence. Steve Bain has joined Coldhurst.

 

Not much activity closed season in Division Three but Adam Rowbotham has moved up a division for Honeywell, playing alongside Ken Dunkerley, Derek Naylor and Ronnie Holt.

 

Division 4 welcomes new team Saddleworth Cricket Club, gained from the Tameside League.

Jackie Parker and Ian Cochrane return for the Deaf Club.

 Failsworth School have the majority of the juniors, as you might expect with Pete Aspin at the helm, securing the future of  our League.

All changes are in Division 4.

 

Team 1 is now Werneth F – Match night is Friday.

Team 8 , Honeywell E  - Match night is now Wednesday.

Team 10 is now OTTC C – Match night is Tuesday.

Team 11, Saddleworth CC – Match night is now Thursday

The Unison Teams play at the Royton Air Training Corps which is off the top end of Radcliffe Street, which is just off Royton Town Centre
