The Semi Finals of the Divisional Handicap cups were played last week in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League.

The Second Division produced the closest finish where Failsworth A, with a 53 point start, got the better of First Transport by 9 points, despite the best efforts of Ken Hayes (+25) and Brian Hall (+14). Rob Carter, Nathan Buckley & Paul Carter were Failsworth’s winning team, who now meet Honeywell B in the Final.

Honeywell B overturned an 18 point handicap deficit to defeat Unison B by 35 points, thanks gains by Barrie Royle (17), Howard Travis (6) & Ian Naylor (38).

Division 1 leaders Glodwick went down to Hyde YMCA, who will meet Hollinwood B in the final.

Division 3 leaders Gilders A reached the final after overturning a 20 pint handicap deficit, to defeat Unison C by 44 points. Ade Ewelia (+47) and Martin Nicholls were the outstanding players on the night for the winners with Paul Whyatt (+3) putting up most resistance.

Their opponents in the Final will be Failsworth B who defeated Unison D by 38 points. Conceding 78 points, the combined effort of Richard Hinchliffe (42) Matthew Evans (13) & Steve Collins (46) saw them through.

In Division 4 Oldham Owls found the 73 points start that Honeywell G received too big a hurdle, losing by 38 points. John Ganley was excellent for the winners, gaining 14 points. Gains by the losers of Philip Tamworth (19), John Tanner (16) & Dave Foden (11) were to no avail.

Honeywell G will now meet Uppermill C who defeated Werneth E by 26 points, overturning a 47 points handicap deficit. An outstanding performance by Stuart Hanson (+62), backed by Gary Kershaw (+13) and Ali Mirza (+2) were good enough.

With some outstanding League action to catch up on, BAE B had an excellent draw at Rosehill A in Div 1 to help their survival chances. Kevin Hill was again outstanding with an unbeaten performance, whilst Phil Ashworth & Dave Pegg recorded 2 wins each for Rosehill.

In Division 2 Werneth C remain on line for promotion, beating Coldhurst A 6-4, for whom Duncan Hadfield was unbeaten.

Andy McNabb’s 3 wins could not prevent Hollinwood E from going down 6-4 at Hyde YMCA B.

Pennine have moved off the bottom for probably the first time this season after picking up 4 points against Hollinwood D and then a draw against Honeywell B in a match where John Robertson starred with 3 wins.

The game in Div 4 between Saddleworth CC & Werneth E ended in a draw, with Darren Mitzi unbeaten for the visitors, whilst Alex Griffiths won 2 for Saddleworth.

Division 4 leaders Coldhurst D were too strong for their E team, gaining all the points.

With just three league games left in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League vital promotion & relegation battles are in abundance.

Werneth C, Grotton A & Unison A are the three teams in contention for the two promotion places in Division 2. With all teams on the same points, Werneth have the advantage of a game in hand against Coldhurst A, with their remaining fixtures against Pennine, Hollinwood D & Hyde YMCA B.

Grotton have to play Coldhurst A, Pennine & Hollinwood D, whilst Unison A play their B team, Failsworth A & Coldhurst A. It seems Coldhurst A will have a big say in the final outcome.

Pennine & Uppermill B look destined for Division 3.

Division 3 has also developed into a three horse race with Gilders A in the driving seat 9 points clear but with a ‘crunch’ match against second placed Werneth D next up. Gilders A finish their season with games against Honeywell E & Owls A, whilst Werneth D entertain Grotton B & Honeywell E.

Unison C in third spot complete their season with matches against their D team, Failsworth B and Failsworth C.

Gilders B, Failsworth C, Honeywell E & Coldhurst C are all battling to avoid the drop. Vital matches include Gilders B v Coldhurst C, Failsworth C v Honeywell E.

Whilst it is looking like the top of Division 1 is a formality for Glodwick TTC to lift the title for their first time, runner up spot is between BAE A and last seasons champions Werneth A, with BAE A currently having the slight edge but with Glodwick to play next, this could change.

At the bottom BAE B helped their survival chances by beating Uppermill A 7-3 with 3 wins for Kevin Hill and two for Mick Hill. Their remaining games are against Rosehill A, Hyde YMCA, Hollinwood A & Glodwick.

Hollinwood C have games against Rosehill A,Uppermill A & Hyde YMCA A, whilst Rosehill B have to play Honeywell A, BAE A & OTTC A.

Coldhurst D are 12 points clear with a game in hand and with a fairly easy run in should be crowned Division 4 champions.

Second placed Uppermill C are 10 points clear of Honeywell F, but both teams meet in their next match which will more than likely be the decider. Uppermill’s remaining games are against Coldhurst E & Honeywell G, whilst Honeywell F play Rosehill C & Coldhurst E.

Tournament Newspaper Article W/c 5th March 07

In the Deckers Restauraunt sponsored Oldham Table Tennis Championships Andy Jackson had a day to remember, winning the three main events.

The day started at 0900 hrs with the Veterans competition (Over 40), when Andy was heard to mutter ‘Fancy having to play George Jones first match on at this time in the morning’. Anyway, it did him no harm whatsoever, putting him in a mean, competitive mood straight away, which lasted the whole day through.

The Vets Semi- final paired Andy against Ian Mclean , and Steve Lyons against Jon DePledge. The final saw Andy overcome the extremely effective ‘long pimple’ play of Steve Lyons in four games.

The main talk of the day was the performances of the ‘unknown’ third division player Ade Ewelia who achieved notable victories against no less than five players from higher divisions, eventually losing in the semi final of the main Singles event to last years winner Darryl Meredith. The other semi final was a repeat of the Vets final with Andy again beating Steve Lyons in four. The stage was then set for Andy’s biggest challenge against current title holder Darryl Meredith in the Final. It turned out pretty straightforward and with Andy being able to block Darryl’s backhand bombs he went on to win in three straight.

Andy partnered Wayne Renton for his third title of the day in the doubles event, beating Darryl Meredith & Ian McLean in the final. In the semi finals the new Title holders had beaten Khamal Hussain & Majid Tubasum, whilst Darryl & Ian had overcame Stuart Meredith & Peter Morris.

The Junior event turned out to be a third successive win for Adam Rowbotham, who will still be a junior at next years tournament. Adam beat Nathan Buckley in the final in three straight but very close games. In the semis Adam had beaten his brother Aaron in four whilst Nathan had overcame Matthew Evans in five.

It was good to see so many juniors, and all of a good standard, taking part.

Included in a full day were Divisional handicap events with the following results:

Simon Hardwick beat Peter Morris in the Division 1 event.

Simon Walsh beat Paul Howarth in the Division 2 event.

Brian Handley beat Malcolm Wills in the division 3 event.

Alex Griffiths beat Chris Brazewell in the Division 4 event
