Newspaper Article W/c 27th January 03
Last week saw the Divisional Handicap Cup underway and the closest finish of all the games was in Division 4 where Failsworth C beat Werneth F by just two points. Failsworth's team of Brian Handley, Alan Nightingale and Andrew Stott set off with a 50 point lead, which by the sixth game was down to 13 points. Next on was Andrew Stott who took 13 points against Malcolm Pellowe to give them a bit of a cushion ,and with just the doubles left their lead was back down to 17 points. This meant they needed 26 points for the win and in a very tense second game they managed the 14 points they needed giving them their 2 point victory.
Elsewhere in Division 4 the 190 point start which youngsters Adam Young, Paul Carter and Nathan Buckley had was good enough to see Failsworth E through by 35 points against Unison D.
The Werneth E team of Phil Coombe, Julian Minshall and Stephen Micklethwaite overcame a 92 point handicap deficit against Owls B and went on to win by 15 points.
In Division 3 the Owls A team of Philip Hall, Martin Raines and Paul Woodward, overcame a 29 point handicap deficit against Gilders B and went on to win by 37 points.
In Division 2 the Gilders A team of Ray Woods, Martin Nicholls and Colin Ogden set off with a 75 point start against Honeywell Lane and held on to win by 20 points.
The Austerlands team of Pete Roddy, Gary Keylock and Dennis Hanson were given a 48 point start by Hamer B and actually won the game on the night increasing their lead to 62 points.
In Division 1the Hanging Gate team of Glen Hewitt, Gary Blackhurst and Keith Fendall set off with a 29 point lead which at one time was down to 18 points, but were able to hold on against Hollinwood B for a 21 point victory.
The Hamer A team of Andy Boardman, Tim Hatton and Phil Myers gave BAe B a 131 point start and went on to win by 30 points.
