Saddleworth ‘Tamworth’ed’

Saddleworth Cricket Club, leaders of Div 4, lost their first match of the season, surprisingly going down 7-3 to mid table Owls B. Philip Tamworth & Richard Tamworth won all 7 points including the doubles. Saddleworth remain top but Deaf Club are hard on their heels, being 14 points behind but with two games in hand. It appears these two clubs have the promotion spots sewn up.

Honeywell E maintained their recent good form with a 7-3 win against Werneth E. Pete Ganley was the only unbeaten player, whilst there were doubles for John Ganley & Werneth’s Phil Coombe.

A maximum from Dave England and singles from Neil Bamford & debutant Andy Pogson helped Coldhurst E to a 6-4 win against Failsworth D, for whom Alan Nightingale & Fred Pickles scored doubles.

Marjorie Riddle & son Mark were unbeaten in Werneth F’s 8-2 victory at OTTC B, for whom George Jervis & young Abigail Griffith scored singles.

There is all to play for in Division 2 with promotion & relegation issues far from settled. First Transport are favourites for the title and are 14 points clear after their 7-3 win at Pennine this week (Ken Hayes & Brian Hall 3 each with one from Tom Ryan).

Runners up spot appears to be between Rosehill B, Hollinwood C & Unison A who all won this week leaving them within 2 points of each other.

At the bottom Unison B had a well needed 9-1 victory against Gilders A, keeping them in bottom place but just one point behind Gilders

Pennine’s 3 (Glen Chadwick & John Robertson singles plus the doubles) against First Transport keeps them just 3 points above Gilders and it would appear that only one of these three team will be playing second division next year.

Hollinwood E may be dragged into it but a maximum from John Foster against Hollinwood D in their 6-4 defeat gives them a 7 point cushion above Pennine.

Coldhurst B & Grotton B, after convincing wins this week, are in good shape for promotion from Division 3.

Leaders Coldhurst B, with an under strength team beat bottom team Honeywell D 10-0, with Phil Mellor & Neil Chapman stepping up.

The Grotton B team of Alf Barker (3), Neil Tomlinson (3) & Alan Sarsfield (2) beat Uppermill C 9-1 with Stuart Hanson avoiding the whitewash.

Mid table Failsworth B drew with third placed Honeywell C thanks to a maximum from Richard Hinchliffe and a double from Vin Gaffey.

In Division 1 Werneth A are looking for runners up spot to Glodwick after their 7-3 win at Hollinwood B, although BAE A with a 9- 1 win at Werneth C are still in with a chance.

Hollinwood A won 7-3 at OTTC A thanks to a treble from Jon DePledge with doubles for Simon Hardwick & OTTC’s Matt Weatherby.

There was a good hard fought match between Hyde YMCA A and Werneth B, with 2 wins a piece for Terry Taylor & Ken Ward for Hyde & similar for Phil Myers and Mandy Winskill. With the score at 4 each, Phil Myers beat Terry Taylor game 9 in the fifth and in the doubles Myers & Darlington beat Taylor & Ward, also game 9 in the fifth, to give Werneth the closest of victories

A maximum from Kevin Hill helped BAE B to a draw with bottom team Wardle for whom Paul Howarth & Liaqat Ali scored doubles.
