The Second Round of the Handicap Cup produced some exciting games, none more so than the First Division clash between Hollinwood B and Werneth A.
Hollinwood started with a 72 points advantage and despite a net gain of 58 points from Darryl Meredith, the combined efforts of George Jones, Dave Cheetham and Colin Boardman restricted Werneth to gaining 13 points from the last 7sets to give Hollinwood victory by 1 point.
The matches in Division 2 also provided close finishes. First Transport received29 points from Werneth C and won by 7 points, thanks to net gains of 19 points
by Kenny Hayes and 24 from Tommy Ryan. Bernard Davies’s plus 14 points was to no avail.
In another close game Honeywell Lane B conceded 48 points to Hollinwood E, overturning the deficit to win by 16 points. There was an outstanding performance from Barrie Royle, producing a net gain of 46, ably supported by Ian Naylor plus 12.
Unison B hosted Pennine and conceded 21 points which they overturned to win by 81 points. John Maher plus 67, David Atkinson plus 11 and Mike O’Gara plus 12 giving Unison victory.
In the last quarter final in Division 2. Failsworth A had to give Hollinwood D 28 points start but thanks to Rob Carter plus 36, Nathan Buckley plus 3 and the doubles plus 17, they came out winners by 26 points. For the losers Steve Mather had a net gain of 27 points.
Division 3 saw league leaders Gilders A overturn a deficit of 150 points to defeat Honeywell Lane E by 16 points thanks to net gains of 69 by Adi Ewelia, 49 by
Martin Nicholls and 30 by Colin Ogden.
Unison D with a start of 77 points defeated Werneth D by 36 points despite the best efforts of Mike Pellowe plus 32 and Alan Else plus 23. The combined efforts of John Mark, Frank Sheldon and Dennis Hayes saw Unison home.
In Division 4 Failsworth F conceded 77 points to Honeywell Lane G and this proved too big a start to give away. Despite the gallant efforts of Joe Crawley plus 22, Jake Crawley plus 15 and Callum Jones plus 29, the combined efforts of John Ganley, Peter Ganley and Peter Sharples saw Honeywell to victory.
Werneth E, with a 65 points start, defeated Saddleworth by 37 points. Darren Mitzi, Brian Micklethwaite and Geoff Aspinall all contributed for the victors. Peter Skuse plus 27 and Chris Brazewell plus 7 did their bit for the losers.
In the First Division of the league Hyde YMCA A defeated Hollinwood A 9-1, thanks to three wins from Steve Lyons and Terry Taylor plus two from Lionel Royle.
Dave Hamilton was unbeaten for Honeywell Lane A in their 6-4 defeat of Aerospace A. Kevin Hill and Mick Hill both had two wins for Aerospace.
In Division 4 Saddleworth defeated bottom club Coldhurst F 10-0, thanks to unbeaten performances from Chris Brazewell, Alex Griffiths and Peter Skuse.
Two wins each from Aaron Rowbotham, Lee Rowbotham and Michael Ganley enabled Honeywell F to defeat Werneth F 7-3. Alan Wynn was unbeaten for Werneth.
There was a personal milestone for Oldham’s Dave Buckley when he was selected
to represent Lancashire Vets team at a county weekend, helping Lancashire to three wins out of four matches played.

At the twentieth time of asking Hollinwood C registered their first win of the season7-3 against Rosehill B. Phil Holmes with three wins and two each from
Gary Newton and John Flowers lifted Hollinwood from the foot of the table.
At the other end of the table Glodwick stay top after a 6-4 defeat of Uppermill A, thanks to three wins from Mark Ramsbottom and two from Majid Tubasum.
Glenn Hewitt with two wins and Gary Crossley and Mark Simpson with one win each replied for Uppermill.
Aerospace A stay second after an 8-2 victory at Rosehill A, with three wins for Tony Vaughan and two each for Tom Lang and Tony Smith. Dave Pegg was the only winner for Rosehill with two wins.
Werneth A stay third after defeating Hollinwood B 7-3 thanks to three wins from Daryl Meredith and two from Stuart Meredith. Dave Cheetham replied with two
wins for Hollinwood.
Werneth C and Unison A are locked together at the top of this division.
Werneth just got the better of First Transport 6-4 thanks to two wins each from Doreen Schofield, Bernard Davies and Paul Wilkinson. Tommy Ryan was unbeaten for First Transport.
Meanwhile Unison A defeated Uppermill B 8-2 with unbeaten performances from Paul Howarth and Liaqat Ali.
Unison B were victors over Hollinwood D 6-4. John Maher recorded three wins for Unison, with one each from Peter Dawson and David Atkinson. Steve Mather with two wins and Glen Dowse and Stewart Clarke with one win each replied for Hollinwood.
Honeywell Lane B defeated Hollinwood E 7-3 thanks to three wins from Ken Ward and two from Howard Travis. Andy Mcnab replied with two wins for Hollinwood.
Unison D surprisingly held leaders Gilders A to a 5-5 draw. Adi Ewelia had three wins for Gilders while two wins each for Frank Sheldon & Mike O’Gara helped secure the draw for Unison.
Werneth D defeated Coldhurst C 7-3 thanks to three wins each from Mike Pellow and Alan Else.
Unison C defeated Gilders B 10-0 with unbeaten performances from Dave Hanson, Mike O’Gara and Paul Whyatt.
There is now only one point between Werneth D and Unison C in second and third place respectively.
Honeywell Lane D remain in fourth place after defeating fifth placed Owls A 6-4. Allan Marston was unbeaten for Honeywell while Dave Harthan and John Tanner replied with two wins each for Owls.
Coldhurst B defeated Honeywell Lane E 6-4 thanks to three wins from Simon Walsh and two from Tom Chandler, Dave Watts replied with two wins for Honeywell.
Rosehill C moved off the bottom of this division despite going down to a 6-4 defeat at Failsworth E. Alan Nightingale was unbeaten for Failsworth while Ashley Murray and John Murray replied with two wins each for Rosehill.
At the other end of the table leaders Coldhurst D defeated Failsworth F 10-0.
Second placed Uppermill C defeated Owls B 6-4, with Stuart Hanson unbeaten for the victors, Dinesh Gorasia replied with two wins for Owls.
Three wins each for Darren Mitzi and Brian Mickletewaite were the highlight of Werneth E’s defeat of Honeywell Lane G 7-3. John Ganley, Peter Ganley and Peter Sharples replied with one win each for Honeywell.

Second placed Aerospace A went down to a shock 6-4 defeat by OTTC A, for whom Dave Griffith was unbeaten with Rebekah Griffith winning two.
Honeywell Lane A increased their survival hopes by defeating Werneth B 6-4, with three wins for Dave Hamilton and two for Adam Rowbotham.
Kevin Hill’s three wins for second bottom Aerospace B couldn’t prevent them going down to a 6-4 defeat by Hollinwood B for whom George Jones, Dave Cheetham and Colin Boardman had two wins each.
Hyde YMCA A came away from Rosehill B with a 6-4 victory, thanks to three wins for Steve Lyons and two for Geoff Ogden. Bob Moores Warwick Francis and Les Craig replied with one win each for Rosehill.
The game between Hollinwood A and Uppermill A was closer than the 7-3 scoreline suggests with seven matches being decided in the final game. John Depledge was unbeaten for Hollinwood.
Unison B got the better of bottom side Pennine 7-3 thanks to three wins from John Maher and two from Mike O’Gara. Glen Chadwick replied with two wins for Pennine.
Second bottom Uppermill B fared even worse, going down to a 10-0 defeat to Honeywell Lane B. Howard Travis, Terry Cooper and Ian Naylor contributed three each for Honeywell.
Gilders A remain top after a 7-3 victory over Coldhurst C. Martin Nicholls had three wins and Colin Ogden two for Gilders. Murray Corbin replied with two wins for Coldhurst.
Bottom side Gilders B came away from Oldham Owls A with a creditable5-5 draw. There were two wins from Mark Craven and one each from Fred Wood and Ged Lomax, plus the doubles for Gilders. Dave Hartham was unbeaten for Owls.
Werneth D kept up their push for promotion defeating Coldhurst B 7-3, thanks to three wins from Alan Else and two from Mick Pellowe.
Grotton Bstayed in touch with a 7-3 victory over Failsworth B, Alf Barker, Steve Smith and Alan Sarsfield winning two sets each for Grotton. Steve Collins was unbeaten for Failsworth.
The Coldhurst D team of Peter Altham, Neil Chapman and Dave Varney march on towards the title with another resounding victory, this time10-0 against Rosehill C.
Uppermill C and Werneth F featured in the closest game in this division with Uppermill winning6-4. Stuart Hanson and Gary Kershaw won two sets each for
Uppermill while Alan Wynn was unbeaten for Werneth.
Failsworth E beat Coldhurst F 8-2 with three wins from Alan Nightingale and Fred Pickles plus two from John Barley.
Honeywell Lane’s F team of Ronnie Holt, Lee Rowbotham and Michael Ganley were too strong for a young OTTC B side resulting in a 10-0 victory for Honeywell.

Leaders, Glodwick TTC, won 7-3 at OTTC A, with
doubles from Mark Ramsbottom, Andy Jackson & Kamal Hussain, who all lost
to the ‘in form’ Dave Griffith.
Honeywell A picked up a good 3 points against
second placed Aerospace A, in their bid to move clear of relegation, thanks
to a double by Dave Hamilton and a single by Adam Rowbotham.
Hyde YMCA A moved into third spot after an 8-2
victory at Uppermill with maximums from Terry Taylor & Steve Lyons.
In a fantastic game of table tennis, Hollinwood
A came away from Rosehill A with the slenderest of victories. Seven of the games
went the full distance, Dave Buckley emerging unbeaten for the visitors with
Dave Pegg & Phil Ashworth each winning two for Rosehill.
Werneth B’s team of Phil Myers, Eddie Darlington
& Doug Hill all won two, with a similar tally for Hollinwood’s Colin Boardman.
Dave Cheetham played well beating Phil Myers and going down game 11 in the fifth
against Doug Hill.
In the basement battle Aerospace B beat Hollinwood
C 6-4 with a maximum by Kevin Hill and a double from Eddie Kalinowski. Gary
Newton doubled for Hollinwood.
The top three teams, Unison A, Werneth C and
Grotton A won convincingly this week, so mentions go to their opponents who
achieved some degree of success, i.e Ken Ward won 2 against Unison for Honeywell
B, Andy McNabb won two for Hollinwood E against Werneth C and Vice Hill won
one for Uppermill against Grotton A.
A maximum from ‘Soon to be 60’ Barrie Royal,
helped Honeywell C to an 8-2 victory against Hollinwood D and keeps them in
fourth spot
Failsworth A moved up the table after a surprising
9-1 win against Hyde YMCA B, thanks to maximums from Rob Carter and Nathan Buckley
and a double from Richard Hinchliffe. It is not often that Dennis Bradshaw draws
a blank for Hyde.
Coldhurst A also improved with an excellent
7-3 win against Unison B, Pete Kelly being unbeaten.
Gilders A moved 17 points clear at the top following
their 8-2 victory at Coldhurst B, with Tom Chandler (2) putting up the only
resistance.
The result from Unison C in 2nd spot
against Grotton B in 5th spot is not yet to hand.
Werneth D in third place, with a game in hand,
won 7-3 at Honeywell D with maximums from Mick Pellowe & Alan Else.
A maximum from David Watts assisted by a vintage,
near perfect performance by Tommy Loftus against fellow veteran Fred Wood, resulted
in a draw at Gilders B for Honeywell E. Doubles for Gerry Lees and Mark Craven
along with a single for Fred Wood completed the scoreline.
Coldhurst C overcame bottom team Failsworth
C 7-3 with a maximum from Terry Holland and doubles by Murray Corbin & Malcolm
Wills. Vinny Gaffey replied with 2 wins, just going down game 9 in the fifth
to Terry Holland.
Coldhurst D (Pete Altham,3, Dave Varney,2, &
Neil Chapman, 2) continued their march towards Div 3 with an 8-2 win at Owls
B. Philip Tamworth & John Tanner replied
with singles.
Second placed Uppermill C disposed of OTTC B
9-1 with John Rutland beating Uppermill’s Ali Mirza.
Third placed Honeywell F sportingly allowed
Brian Micklethwaite to replace the Werneth E’s Dave Renton who injured himself
on the night. Brian returned the favour, winning just one of the two games he
played.
Failsworth School F youngsters had a decent
draw at Werneth F with doubles from Joe & Jake Crawley and a single from
James Collins, all losing to Alan Wynn. Mark Riddle beat James Collins in 4
close games.
Failsworth E move to within 3 points of Honeywell
G after beating them 8-2. Their winners were Alan Nightingale (3), Fred Pickles
(3), & John Barley (1), whilst Peter and David Ganley won one each for Honeywell.
The bottom two clubs met in a drawn match. Coldhurst
F came back from 5-2 down against Rosehill C, with 18-16 & 15-13 games in
the last two sets favouring Coldhurst.
