ROWBOTHAM IS NEW TITLE HOLDER

Adam Rowbotham of Honeywell Lane was crowned the Oldham & District Table Tennis League Junior Singles Champion this week. The event was played on a group basis with the top two from each group contesting the semi-finals.

Nathan Buckley faced Aaron Rowbotham in the first semi-final and displayed patience and correct shot selection to beat Aaron 11-9 11-8 11-8.

The other semi-final was between Adam Rowbotham and title holder Paul Carter. Adam displayed sound counter blocking skills coupled with aggressive forehand attacks to dethrone the holder in a match of high quality, 13-11 11-13 11-6 11-8. Adam beat Nathan in the final 11-5 11-7 11-7.

The Divisional Handicap Cup Finals were staged this week with the all Division 1 Werneth encounter proving somewhat one-sided. Contributions from Nick Mooney (45) and Stuart Meredith (34) were the foundation of the 85 point win for the A team.

In Division 2 Uppermill A started proceedings with a 32 point lead over Hollinwood C who seemed unable to challenge this deficit. Gary Crossley gained 25 points with Mark Simpson and Keith Moores chipping in with 10 and 8 respectively to win the match by 92 points.

Division 3 provided the closest game with Hamer Delph overcoming Coldhurst C by just 18 points. Alan Marston clawed back 56pts, backed by Ian Naylor (44) and Derek Naylor (25).

The Failsworth H and Honeywell C Division 4 final was witnessed by a sizeable enthusiastic crowd, they enjoyed the skills of a host of junior talent which resulted in a surprise win for Failsworth. Matthew Evans impressed with a gain of 18pts with Daniel Cooper and Bradley Dawson stemming the tide. The 57pt clawback from Adam Rowbotham was in vain as Failsworth took the cup by 52pts.

The Oldham Vets team beat Bury away 5-4 in the inter-league trophy semi-final. Doubles from Dave Buckley and Ken Hayes set up a final date with the winners of Wirral and Halton.

The Annual Dinner & Presentation Evening is at the Pennine Way Hotel on Friday 13th May 05 and all monies should be with Bob Johnson by the Closing date of 30th April 05

BAe B AVOID DROP

The 8-2 win for BAe B at a weakened bottom side Grotton A means they will be playing Div 1 table tennis next season. Kevin Hill was unbeaten backed by doubles from Eddie Kalinowski and Peter Hill with the unfortunate Alf Barker replying likewise.

Depending on the potential restructure of the division Hyde YM A will be biting their fingernails this summer as they occupy second bottom place.

Glodwick rounded off their campaign with a comfortable 8-2 win at Hollinwood B. Majid Tubasum trebled backed by doubles from Kamal Hussain and John Hutchinson, Simon Hardwick scoring two in reply.

A Stuart Meredith treble backed by doubles from Nick Mooney and Doug Hill saw Werneth A home 8-2 against Honeywell A, Tim Baker replying with a double.

In Div 2 the only issue still to be settled was the second relegation place. The 9-1 win for champions Rosehill B has effectively relegated Failsworth B. Simon Collins and Warwick Francis were unbeaten backed by a Jim Findlow double.

The dress rehearsal for the Div 2 cup final saw Hollinwood C and Uppermill A share the points. Bob Johnson was in fine form, posting a treble with Gary Crossley and Mark Simpson replying with doubles. An interesting statistic is that had the game been played on the cup rules basis Uppermill would have been comfortable victors.

Already promoted Werneth C appeared to have taken their foot off the pedal, losing  7-3 to Hyde YM B. Nick Bakewell was unbeaten backed by a Dennis Bradshaw double with Doreen Schofield responding likewise.

Hollinwood E beat Failsworth C 7-3. The platform of the success was doubles from Jack Christian, John Foster and Harry Ross with the unbeaten stint of Rob Carter in vain.

Div 3 champions Coldhurst A swept aside their C team 9-1. Simon King and Gary Keylock were unbeaten backed by a John McLoughin double.

Runners-up Hamer Delph signed off in style with an 8-2 win over lowly Gilders B. Ian Naylor and Alan Marston being unbeaten.

Unbeaten stints from Glen Jackson and Andy Hey backed by a Peter Jones double helped Unison B to a 9-1 win over Owls A.

Failsworth ended their Division 4 campaign on a high note beating third placed Uppermill C 9-1. Ray Woods was again unbeaten backed by doubles from Champa Vachji and Rebekah Griffith and the double reply of Gary Kershaw being in vain.

Jeff Elliot was in fine form for Coldhurst E in the 7-3 win over Werneth F. He was unbeaten backed by a Neil Chapman double with Brian Mickelthwaite replying likewise.

Owls B and Unison D shared the points. Paul Woodward was unbeaten for Owls with Dennis Heyes and Roger Jagger responding with doubles.

Trebles from Ken Dunkerley and Aaron Rowbotham backed by an Adam Rowbotham double helped Honeywell C to a 9-1 win over Werneth E.

The Oldham Vets team brushed aside Liverpool 7-2 in the inter league cup. Dave Buckley was unbeaten backed by doubles from Jon De Pledge and Ken Hayes. Oldham will now face Bury away in the semi-final next week.

The handicap finals will be staged at Zion Church, Lees next week.

A reminder that the Oldham Junior Championships take place at Failsworth School tonight from7pm and spectators are welcome.

It is with sadness that the league learns of the death of two of it’s former members. Stuart Sneyd was a well respected and tireless official and tournament organiser of the Oldham League. Brian Millet finished his playing days for Werneth before moving to the Derbyshire area. Our thoughts are with both families.

With promotion issues settled in Division 2 of the Oldham & District Table Tennis League, next weeks final matches will determine the second relegation place.

With Grotton B already down it is between Failsworth B and Pennine.

Failsworth B’s draw with Grotton B does not look enough for survival as they have to play leaders Rosehill B in their last game and are 3 points behind Pennine.

Pennine, who picked up a vital 4 points against Honeywell Lane B, finish their campaign at Hollinwood D where 2 or 3 points should see them safe.

Rosehill B won 8-2 against Hollinwood E with the usual three from Simon Collins and Jimmy Findlow and Andy Perry losing to  Jack Christian.

Werneth C’s 7-3 win at Failsworth assures them of no worse than second spot. Bernard Davies, Doreen Schofield and Paul Wilkinson won two each, all losing to Failsworth’s Rob Carter. They have a tricky final match against Hyde YMCA B.

In a similar situation in Division 1 relegation issues are also to be settled in the final matches .BAe B are just one point in front of Hyde YMCA A with just one game remaining at already relegated Grotton A.

With Hyde YMCA A having difficult games to play at Glodwick and at home to Werneth B it is too close to call.

Champions NCFPP won 8-2 against Hollinwood B with maximums from Andy Jackson and Gary Skinner with a double from Billy Russell who lost to Simon Hardwick.

Runners up BAe A beat Werneth B 8-2. Tony Bates was unbeaten with Tom Lang losing to Phil Myers and Tony Smith losing to Mandy Winskill.

Promotion and relegation is all done and dusted in Division 3 with Coldhurst A and Hamer Delph being promoted. Failsworth D and Coldhurst C are relegated.

Coldhurst A’s 10-0 whitewash against Uppermill B makes them favourite for the title.

PBAIS moved above Gilders B after their 9-1 win against Coldhurst C. Brian Shaw and John Herman were unbeaten with Dave Bleakley losing to Peter Altham.

Gilders B went down 7-3 at home to Unison B for whom Andy Hey trebled.

Owls a battled out a creditable draw with third placed Gilders A, thanks to treble from the in form Dave Harthan and a double from Paul Woodward. Colin Ogden with a double and singles from Gerry Lees and Tony Robinson replied for Gilders.

The Unison C team of John Maher (3), Mike O’Gara (2) and Barry Johnson (2) beat Failsworth D 8- 2 with a Paul Carter double in reply.

Coldhurst D and Failsworth E are all but promoted from Division 4. Third placed Uppermill C have to play the top two teams in their last two matches and while it would be a big ask for them to clinch one of the promotion places, it is a remote possibility.

Failsworth E drew with fourth placed Honeywell Lane mainly thanks to a Ray Woods treble. Aaron and Adam Rowbotham replied with doubles.

Owls B won 8-2 at Failsworth F. Martin Raines and Mike Stansfield were unbeaten with John Tanner losing to Alan Nightingale.

BAe A will be satisfied with runners-up spot in their first season in the league. Tony Bates and Tom Lang posted doubles in the 6-4 win over Glodwick for whom Majid Tubasum and Kamal Hussain replied likewise.

Relegated Grotton A recorded a very creditable draw against Hollinwood A. Dave Morris posted a double with Dave Cheetham replying similarly and George Jones being unbeaten.

The Failsworth duo of junior Rebekah Griffith and Champa Vachji were given their chance in the top division against BAe B. Although they lost 7-3, Rebekah claimed her first top flight win over Ted Robakowski, supported by a Mohammed Sajid double. Peter Hill was unbeaten backed by an Eddie Kalinowski double.

The top game in Div 2 saw the top two lock horns. Leaders Rosehill B edged Werneth C 6-4. Andy Perry was unbeaten backed by a Simon Collins double with Bernard Davies replying likewise.

Mark Craven trebled for Gilders B backed by a Colin Ogden double in the 6-4 win over Owls A for whom Paul Woodward posted two.

The ultimate basement battle in Div 4 resulted in a draw between the F teams of Werneth and Coldhurst. Werneth did have the advantage of a four- point start due to Coldhurst fielding an ineligible player. Coldhurst’s ever improving Paul Cahill was unbeaten backed by a John Greenwood double

The three Unison D players all posted doubles in the 7-3 win at Failsworth G, John Mark, Dennis Heyes and Roger Jagger with the treble reply of Peter Aspin in vain.

Coldhurst E and Failsworth F contested a hard fought 5-5 draw. Neil Chapman trebled for Coldhurst with Rob Ainsworth replying with a double.

Werneth B will contest the Div 1 handicap final after beating Honeywell A by 17pts. Phil Myers, Eddie Darlington and Mandy Winskill made contributions of 30, 17, and 19 respectively.

In Div 2 Uppermill reached the final by the slenderest of margins over Failsworth B. Gary Crossley clawed back 57pts. backed by 33 from Mark Simpson in the 538 to 530 win.

Already promoted Hamer Delph overcame their Div 3 rivals Coldhurst A by 15pts. Hamer Delph will face Coldhurst C in the final.
